Narrow and steep mountain roads, combined with heavy loads or passenger, is an endurance test for the R1150 clutch which has a fairly low capacity for heat. The clutch of the R1150GS, subjected to the large torque of the boxer cannot withstand the extreme stress of off-road or sports riding. For example it can burn up in a few minutes if you are stuck in the sand. Many long distance travellers riding R11GS will be able to tell you, from experience, how to change the clutch or the story of how they located a workshop in the bush.

A hard fall on the R1100S can break the steering stop. The Hard part LA provides a second "stop" which protects the suspension sliders, the telelever, and all other parts damaged when the original steering stop is overpowered. The steering stop on the R1100S may break after a heavy fall: In case of extreme stress on the handlebar, the steering stop can break. (It is a time-consuming and quite expensive job to replace the whole yoke.) The yoke or handlebar can also damage tank and fairings. The brake lines can also be damaged.
