GME – UHFs and EPIRBs feed

UHF MADE EASY
Confused about the features? Here’s what it all means:

CTCSS: Allows the user to select one of 38 codes per channel. Once selected, the radio remains silent unless another radio with the same channel and code calls. Cuts out unwanted chatter, especially in cities where the quality of UHF dialogue can leave a lot to be desired.

SELCALL: Sends a warning/call signal from one radio to a specific second unit by using the target radio’s ID number, triggering an alarm and activating a call-received message on the unit’s track info from a local or two. Group and Dual scanning can be handy because it sets the radio to scan between selected channels, so if your group is using multiple channels you can listen for calls from both.

VOX: This isn’t so handy on dirt bikes, but can be useful. VOX is simply voice activated calling, which is brilliant in many applications. The trouble is that there is so much noise in a dirt bike helmet that the radio can’t tell what is voice and what is wind noise, and transmits almost constantly.

ROGERBEEP:
Radios equipped for this transmit a beep when the mic switch is released, letting the person receiving the call know that the caller has finished speaking. This stops people trying to transmit and receive at the same time, which plain never works. screen. This is brilliant for dirt riders, because even if you miss the alarm sound, you still know someone has called – great for letting lead riders know that there’s a problem back in the pack.

OPEN & GROUP SCANNING: Open scanning is where the radio scans all 40 channels, pausing when it detects a signal. This handy feature allows the user to identify channels used by those nearby, which can be very useful if you need help in a hurry.

EPIRBs are one of those things we should all carry but hope to never use. When activated, Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons send a distress signal out that is most often picked up by commercial air flights then relayed to Australian Search and Rescue, who notify local authorities to begin a search. These units have saved many lives in the outback, and should be carried by anyone traveling to remote regions.
