The new film by Thomas Junker takes him to Africa. Together with his partner Steffen Müller, he travels to the people who live in a "sea without water" - the Sahara , the name given to the sand and stone desert by the Tuareg.
The film starts in Libya, a country caught between oil wealth and Roman history. Junker and Müller follow the trail of slaves and salt caravans in the Ténéré Desert. In Agadez the sultan grants them an audience. They experience Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, in all its facets. And they continually come across the traces of famous Sahara researchers.
How do people live in the Sahara and the Sahel zone? Junker and Müller examine this question, for example, in Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali and Mauritania. Four of the worlds poorest countries. But also countries which produced Mopti or Djenné, cities with centuries-old culture and a trading tradition. In addition to the inhabitants of North Africa, the film naturally shows the breathtaking landscape in this region: sand dunes, rock formations, oases, hidden lakes, the River Niger ...
